The 1st World Junior Biathlon Championships took place in East German Altenberg near Dresden from February 16 to 19, 1967 , simultaneously with the adult world championships .
Only men's competitions were held among juniors (under 21 years old). 2 sets of medals were played, in the individual 15 km race with three firing lines and a relay race . The competition was attended by 24 athletes from 8 countries.
In the individual race, the Norwegian Tour Svendsberget won due to the best skiing. Silver medalist Vladimir Kalinichev from the USSR lost him three and a half minutes on the track, but shot a little better. Until the last firing line, the Romanians Gheorghe Zerzel and M. Stoyan and the Swede P. Mauder fought for victory, but unsuccessfully fired while standing and rolled down in the classification.
In the relay race, the USSR national team led the first one and a half stages, in which Vasily Tretyakov successfully started. However, in the second shooting of the second stage, Yuri Mikhailov did not hit a single target and went to five penalty circles, in the third stage, Vladimir Kalinichev also shot unsuccessfully. As a result, the USSR national team rolled back to fourth place, and the Polish team won, shooting clean.
