A typical garden tour usually takes one to two hours. There are various bridges, walkways and small hills in the park that offer wonderful views of the garden and the surrounding landscape. The most popular and beautiful point is the Shiun-zan hill ( 紫雲山 Shiun-zan ) , located on the western border of the garden [1]

Buildings built in the garden date back to the beginning of the 17th century. In 1625, a feudal lord from the principality of Takamatsu , Sanuki province, whose name was Ikoma Takatoshi ( 生 駒 高俊 ) , began construction of the Ritsurin garden. Construction was originally carried out around the South Pond, against which lay a beautiful green Shiun hill. Beginning in 1642, further construction was continued by Matsudaira Yorishigi ( 松 平 頼 重 ) . All work was completed only in 1745, 100 years after the start. The official opening of the garden to the public took place on March 16, 1875. In 1953, the garden was included in the list of historical places in Japan ( 日本 の 特別 名勝 Nihon no Tokubetsu Meishō ) .
