The history of the Rostov Hippodrome dates back to the end of the 19th century .
Before the revolution in the field of the Don Army, horse breeding developed at a rapid pace, which was dealt with by both local Cossacks and private entrepreneurs, and the latter were also subsidized by the state. In the middle of 1880, there were 86-89 stud farms in Zadonye , then by 1900 their number reached 145 with a total population of 83 thousand [1] . Around the same years, race societies were established in Novocherkassk and Nakhichevan-on-Don . Amateur trotting runs have become a popular pastime for locals [2] .
In the first half of the 1890s, the provincial authorities allocated a land plot under the race hippodrome on the territory of the Balabanovskaya grove. Thanks to the efforts of the Rostov-Nakhichevan racing society, the square was quickly equipped: a two-story house was built for the needs of society, a tribune, several stables, and the territory itself was surrounded by a fence. The first races took place already in 1894 [2] .
In Rostov-on-Don, the race hippodrome was opened in 1902 [3] , and from that moment it is customary to count off the beginning of its activities. A year earlier, the Rostov-Nakhichevan Racing Society, in agreement with the Rysista Society on joint activities, decided to transfer equipment from their site to the trotting hippodrome, which was located closer to the city center. The hippodrome became a test site for professional horse breeders and amateurs, some of them coming to Rostov-on-Don from other cities [2] .
Under Soviet rule, all private stud farms, as well as Cossack herds, were eliminated as part of the rattling policy. The onset of hunger soon also contributed to the deterioration of the situation: horse breeding practically ceased to exist [1] .
Nevertheless, immediately after the end of the Civil War, the authorities tried to improve the situation: So, in November 1920, the Horse Breeding and Horse Breeding Directorate was established in Rostov-on-Don, and new horse breeding factories were organized on those lands where private premises were previously located. Nevertheless, the situation remained extremely difficult: on the Don in 1923 there were only 2,000 valuable mares. The recovery of the industry took place with great difficulty [1] .
Nevertheless, there have been successes. So, according to the reporting data, in the Rostov Region in 1940 there were already 230.3 thousand horses. Such a large number became possible due to the high-level work on artificial insemination of mares [1] .
However, already in 1952, by decision of the authorities, many horse farms were liquidated, and the horses themselves were partially destroyed. In the Rostov Region, there were 5 out of 22 stud farms, and only 3 out of 132 breeding farms. This again caused great material and moral damage to the industry [1] .
In 1944, at the age of 14, the future multiple European and USSR champion N. N. Nasibov spoke at the Rostov Hippodrome for the first time, winning 40 races in the season [4] .
With the gradual revival of horse breeding, the Rostov Hippodrome, which was opened in 1925, was able to continue its activity. His appearance gradually changed: the length of his race track was increased to 1968 meters, a large arbor with side stands was erected in the center of the field. In the mid-1980s, the stands were reconstructed. The territory for accommodating spectators was expanded to almost the entire length of the track, new stables appeared [2] .
In 2002, on the threshold of its centenary, the Rostov Hippodrome ceased to be a state-owned enterprise and, at the moment, is owned by AgroSoyuz Yug Rus LLC, becoming the first private hippodrome in Russia [2] .
Current status
After privatization, the hippodrome was converted. Now it has 14 stables, including two two-story ones. The field occupies 28 hectares. There are two tracks - training and prize, coating - soil and sand. It has its own forge, a veterinary hospital, ammunition depot, and a granary [5] . The hippodrome has a two-tiered platform for 5 thousand spectator seats, as well as several dozen reception centers for bets. With him, there is also a hotel where visitors from both Russia and other countries of the world are accommodated. Horse racing takes place every Sunday [2] .
