Architectural features
The facade of the one-story mansion has 13 windows. The building has no colonnade, but carries the main features of Russian classicism . The corners of the flat facade are decorated with rusts ; order croutons ( dentils ) are located along the eaves. The castle stones crown the composition of all windows, although not all of them are cashed . Their rhythm is somewhat disturbed. Over the part of the windows there are triangular sandriks , above the rest - rectangular niches, but without decor. The compositional axis is not clearly expressed. The building illustrates the building characteristic of Taganrog of the first half of the XIX century [1] .
House history
The mansion was built in 1806 by official Sivere. In 1816 the building was rebuilt according to the project of architect F. Moll and sold to the city as a mayor’s apartment. The mansion at different periods belonged to different owners. The most significant of these was the mayor of Taganrog Peter Papkov , who bought it four years after construction [2] . Emperor Alexander I stayed here twice - in 1818 and 1825. The last visit was fatal for him. Alexander I died here on November 19th from a fever . After his death, the house was bought by the widowed empress Elizaveta Alekseevna . The first memorial museum in Russia dedicated to the emperor was also created here. Alexander II and Alexander III visited the Alexander I Palace, poets Vasily Zhukovsky and Alexander Pushkin with the writer who accompanied the writer on his way into exile by General Nikolai Raevsky and his daughter Maria Volkonskaya , artist Ivan Aivazovsky , education commissariat Anatoly Lunacharsky , who left the following entry in the visitors' book: “This the ancient corner must be preserved as a historical household monument, mainly for educational purposes ... ” , and many other significant figures [1] .
For 12 years, starting in 1864, an amateur choir, whose conductor was Pavel Chekhov (father of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov ), performed in the home church of the Exaltation of the Church, which was set up in a mansion in memory of the emperor. In the late 1860s - early 1870s, Alexander, Nikolay and Anton Chekhov also sang in this choir. In 1928 the museum was closed, and some of its exhibits were moved to the palace Alferaki .
