An important component of the creative activity of Yu. P. Matrosov is traditional culture, history, folklore, customs, and everyday life.
Yu. P. Matrosov received his first recognition in the early 1970s, working in the technique of embossing and woodcarving. The artist wrote: “The beginning of the exhibition activity is connected with the work“ Table ”, executed in the technique of woodcarving, which was exhibited at the First Zonal Exhibition of works by young artists of the Gorky and Ulyanovsk Regions, Mari, Mordovia, Tatar and Chuvash Autonomous Republics in Cheboksary in 1973” [one]
A favorite genre in painting is a romantic rural landscape , conveying the characteristic features of a local hilly landscape with green slopes and fields, endowed with historical associations and symbolic meanings. Nature is a great creator and wise teacher for an artist.
A significant part of the artist’s works reflects local cultural traditions; figures of villagers are organically inscribed in their compositions. Art historians note: “Through the harmony of all the details, one can feel the connection of times and generations, pagan antiquity and the present of our people. Perhaps, there has never been such an embodiment of this theme in Chuvash painting ” [2] .
