City before the fire

Syzran was one of the largest county cities in Russia with 45,000 inhabitants. At the turn of the XIX — XX centuries, the main industry in Syzran was flour milling. The city ranked 4th in Russia in grain processing, second only to Nizhny Novgorod , Saratov and Samara .

Fire Spread

According to one version, the first fire occurred early in the morning in the village of Zakrymza as a result of a careless campfire in the yard of one house. From the preserved chronicle of the Elias Church it follows that “a fire started in the house of a certain poor merchant Malyshev, a resident of the Ilyinsky settlement from careless handling of fire (it seems, when cooking jam)”. Then the fire quickly swept the entire Krymzu.

After the flight of the flame across the river Krymzu, the city center was caught in fire. By the middle of the day on July 5, the whole city was burning.

Destruction

The county hospital, the public library founded in 1873, the city gymnasium, the real school, the city treasury, as well as the post and telegraph buildings were destroyed by fire.

The fire destroyed the building where the Volga-Kama Bank branch was located, as well as all the mills, food depots and more than 100 wagons with wheat located at the railway station and adjacent to it tracks. One of the Orthodox monasteries and seven churches perished in flames, including the St. Nicholas Cathedral, built in 1859.

Recovery

The Russian government has provided assistance to the population of the city. By the decision of the ministries of internal affairs and agriculture, the emigrants were allocated a rather large sum of money at that time. A consignment of canned food was also sent here, and the townspeople were allowed free leave of the forest for the construction of new houses. After some time, help to the residents of Syzran began to come from all over Russia, and even from beyond its borders.

The vowels of the City Duma (nowadays - the deputies) decided that on the central street of Syzran (now Sovetskaya Street), only stone houses should be built. In addition, the authorities decided to pay more attention to the landscaping of the city, as during the fire it was noticed that the crowns of deciduous trees slow down the spread of fire.

The county hospital was restored at the expense of the Red Cross in 1907, and now in its place, on Sovetskaya Street, there is an ambulance station. In 1910, the city public library was also restored. In general, it took more than five years to restore Syzran.
