Biography

He was born in 1816 in the family of a rural priest [1] in the Ryazan province (according to other sources, in 1818 [2] ; however, the “ Report of the Imperial Moscow University for the years 1858-59 academic and 1859 civil years ” indicates that he was 1859 43 years).

He studied at the Ryazan Theological Seminary . After retiring from the clergy (1839), he entered as a high - school student at the medical faculty of Moscow University , but was soon transferred to official content . During training, he was especially interested in practical surgery. At the 5th year, he began to study at the surgical clinic of Moscow University, where, under the guidance of Professor F.I. Inozemtsev, he performed surgical operations and also participated in experiments on animals conducted by physiology professor A.M. Filomafitsky .

After completing the training course (1843), he was approved as a doctor of the 1st department and, with special permission of the Ministry of Education, was left “for classes in the department of comparative anatomy and physiology, without service rights, with an assignment of 200 rubles per year from the university’s budget ". Determined by the assistant veterinarian in veterinary affairs (February 1844), transferred to the same position in the department of anatomy of the human body (September 1845). He received the title of prosector in this department (May 1846) and the post of head of the anatomical office. He made anatomical preparations not only for Moscow University: he compiled anatomical collections for the Moscow First and Second Cadet Corps, the Moscow Noble Institute , and the 1st Moscow Gymnasium .

He defended his doctoral dissertation (1850) on the topic: "On the ligature of the iliac artery" (in Latin) and received a doctorate in medicine and surgery. Extraordinary professor in the department of anatomy of the human body since September 1853, ordinary professor from December 1859; taught Anatomy descriptive and physiological , General anatomy with micrography , Physiology of a healthy person [3] . He resigned from Moscow University in 1869.

I. Sokolov taught not only at the university: he gave lectures on plastic anatomy at the School of Painting and Sculpture of the Moscow Art Society free of charge (since September 1848). A supernumerary resident in a Moscow hospital for workers (1850-1853), where he was in charge of the surgical and ophthalmic departments, performed operations and autopsy of the dead. Operator (surgeon) in the Moscow Golitsyn hospital (since 1858). Consultant-operator of the Moscow Military Hospital (since 1861). In 1860, he mummified the body of a hairy Mexican Julia Pastran .

Founder and first chairman (1861-1871) of the Society of Russian Doctors in Moscow .

Scientific research has been devoted to human anatomy, experimental physiology and surgery. I. M. Sokolov was the first in the world to successfully transfuse a calf with a cholera patient. He left few printed works, among them:
