Origin of title
The name comes from Falco subbuteo , the Latin name for the cheglock , a small bird of prey from the falcon family. Peter Adolph (1916–1994) originally planned to name the game “Hobby,” but was refused by the patent office.
Game Origin
Formally, the game was created in 1946, in fact, the first sets became available in March 1947, and obtaining a patent was completely delayed until May 1947. The first Subbuteo sets consisted of a gate made of wire with paper nets, a ball made of cellulose acetate and cardboard playing pieces in two main sets (red shirts with white shorts and blue shirts with white shorts) with a base of buttons weighted with lead washers. The playing field was not provided in the kit, but there was an instruction on how to put chalk on the blanket (it was recommended to use the old army blanket). Subbuteo initially faced fierce competition with Newfooty, a similar game invented in 1926 by William Lane Keeling (born 1900-died 1976) for his children, patented and released in 1929, Newfooty ceased production in 1961, year after a failed television ad campaign, but his demise is believed to be related to the launch of Subbuteo molded players. In 1968, the Waddingtons toy company outbid production for £ 250,000. In 1992, there was an attempt to make Subbuteo an Olympic sport. In 1996, Hasbro, the brand owner, suddenly ceased to provide good game material for global players. New manufacturers appear trying to fill the void in the market. In 2012, Subbuteo returned to stores with a new style of three-dimensional rubber figures.
All this time the game is actively developing; rules are regulated, players' figures change, sets are painted in the colors of famous teams. By 1949, there were already 24 “teams” of figures on sale. By the beginning of the 1960s, “footballers” were cast from plastic. According to surveys, 9 out of 10 English boys in the 70s had their own team for Subbuteo. Mastering the release of special figures of football players for a throw-in and breaking through corner, new teams, full-fledged playing fields. Additional attributes for the game are made: stands, fans, lighting towers and much more.
Game Rules
Subbuteo is played by 2 players on the field measuring 1.5 by 1 meters with the corresponding football markings. Each has a team of 10 figures of football players with a height of about 2 cm, mounted on a round sliding base with a diameter of about 2 cm, and 1 goalkeeper with a long (about 15 cm) control handle. The goal of the game, hitting the figures of soccer players with the fingernail of the index or middle finger, roll the ball into the opponent’s goal without touching the ball and his players with the opponent’s figures. In the rules, Subbuteo tries to follow the rules of football as closely as possible. However, there are some changes. The player retains possession of the ball until his pieces, as a result of hitting them, touch the ball. If, after hitting the ball’s touch figure, this figure was not there, or the ball touches the opponent’s figure, the team loses the ball. It is also a violation to use the same figure more than three times in a row to hit the ball. A shot on goal can only be applied after the ball is behind the line of attack; a line parallel and equally spaced between the goal line and the midline. The offside rule is valid, but only related to the figures located behind the line of attack of the opposing team (as opposed to the middle line, as in football itself).
FISTF International Sports Federation
In 2016, FISTF - the International Table Football Federation - consists of 39 countries. The Federation was formed in 1992. Before that, for almost 30 years, the world of sports Subbuteo was sent by two organizations: FISA (Federation of International Subbuteo Associations) and ETF (European Tablesoccer Federation): similar to FIFA and UEFA, only the rules of the game in each structure were cultivated their.
