Ministry of Defense of Uzbekistan

The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Uzbekistan is a department under the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan , which is the central executive body implementing state policy in the field of defense , as well as the leadership of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Uzbekistan [2] .

Content

Creation History

The military department of the Republic of Uzbekistan was created one of the first in the union republics (one day after the creation of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan ), even before the collapse of the USSR .

On September 6, 1991, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a decree establishing the Ministry of Defense [1] .

On July 3, 1992, the department was renamed the Ministry of Defense [3] [4] .

The Ministry of Defense is located in Tashkent , in the building at 100 Mirzo Ulugbek Avenue (formerly known as Maxim Gorky Avenue), which previously housed the headquarters of the Turkestan military district .

Department of Defense functions

The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Uzbekistan performs the following functions [2] :

  • command and control of subordinate troops;
  • pursuing state policy in the field of defense and military construction;
  • equipping the troops of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Uzbekistan with modern weapons, military equipment and material and technical means;
  • expansion of military cooperation;
  • organization of conscription and training of the Armed Forces.

Ministry of Defense Tasks

The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Uzbekistan performs the following tasks [2] :

  • responsible for developing the conceptual foundations of the national military strategy, construction and development of the Armed Forces;
  • carries out strategic and operational planning, directing combat operations of troops;
  • develops and implements measures for operational and combat training of troops, adaptation of their organizational structure to the forms and methods of use of troops;
  • within the limits of its competence, issues directives and orders binding on all ministries, state committees and departments, command and control units, units, formations and units of the Armed Forces.
  • Acts as the main body of the operational strategic command of the Armed Forces, military districts, military units of ministries, state committees and departments

Manual

The leadership of the Ministry of Defense is carried out by the Minister of Defense, who is appointed by the President of Uzbekistan from among the military personnel.

General Staff

In 2000, the General Headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Uzbekistan , which reports to the Ministry of Defense, was renamed the Joint Headquarters of the Armed Forces , which is the single command body for the development and implementation of decisions in the field of armed protection of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country [5] .

Territorial offices

For military administration, the territory of Uzbekistan is divided into the following territorial administrations [2] :

  • The South-West Special Military District is the district headquarters in Beshkent near the regional center of Karshi . It includes the territories of Surkhandarya, Kashkadarya, Bukhara, Navoi, Samarkand and Jizzakh regions;
  • Eastern Military District - headquarters in Margilan . Includes territories of Ferghana, Andijan and Namangan regions;
  • Tashkent Military District - headquarters in Tashkent. It occupies the territory of the Tashkent region, the city of Tashkent and the Syr Darya region;
  • Northwest Military District - headquarters in Nukus . It includes the territory of the Republic of Karakalpakstan and the Khorezm region.
