Biography

In 1979 he graduated from the University of Louisiana with a bachelor of science degree , in 1983 received a doctorate in medicine from the medical school of the University of Louisiana in New Orleans [1] .

For about 20 years, he worked the Earl K. Long in Baton Rouge , specializing in liver diseases and gastroenterology . During this period, he organized programs to support children's health in schools, made efforts to re-equip the building of the Kmart shopping center, abandoned after 2005 hurricanes, for medical purposes, and taught at the University of Louisiana [2] .

In 2006-2008 he was in the Senate of Louisiana .

In 2008, he was elected from the Republican Party to the US House of Representatives of the 111th convocation and was twice re-elected, retaining his mandate from January 3, 2009 to January 3, 2015.

In 2014, Republicans nominated Cassidy for the U.S. Senate election, where he was opposed by Democrat Mary Landry , the holder of the position. Louisiana’s senator’s chairs are not controlled by any of the main American political parties with reliability, and, according to some observers, the fact that they belonged to the Republican Party was not enough to win even in the midterm election year, amid the dramatic decline in the popularity of Democratic President Barack Obama . Analysts also attributed Cassidy's shortcomings to his insufficiently vivid image in the eyes of voters [3] .

On November 4, 2014, elections were held, as a result of which none of the candidates received an absolute majority of votes. Republican voices were split between Cassidy and retired aviation colonel Rob Maness, who was supported by supporters of the Republican " tea party movement." Cassidy received 41%, losing first place to Landry (42.1%), while Maness took away 13.8% of the vote. In the second round of voting on December 6, Cassidy defeated Landry (55.9% versus 44.1%). During the election campaign, Landry supported the Obama administration's healthcare reform , which was extremely unpopular in a conservative Louisiana. In addition, from sociological studies it follows that she was supported by 9 out of 10 African-American voters, but only two out of ten whites [4] .

Personal life

Bill Cassidy, son of Jim and Betty Cassidy, grew up in Baton Rouge. Father was involved in life insurance , Bill has three older brothers: Jim, David and Steve. During his studies at the university, Bill met Laura Layden (Laura Layden), later they got married in their family with three children: Will, Meg, Kate; all attended public schools in Baton Rouge. Laura Laden-Cassidy was also a doctor, head of the surgical department of the Earl Long Hospital, and later worked at a private medical center specializing in the treatment of breast cancer [5] .
