“Live to Tell” is a song by American singer Madonna from her third studio album True Blue (1986). Initially, the song was written by Patrick Leonarod for the film " Wedge Wedge ", when Madonna offered the song, then, after rewriting the lyrics, she offered it to her then husband Sean Penn for use in the film " Point blank ." It was released March 26, 1986 as a lead single . The song also appeared on The Immaculate Collection (1990), Something to Remember (1995), and Celebration (2009).

The song was warmly received by music critics, who often called it one of the best ballads in Madonna's career. The single also became commercially successful, becoming the third No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 , as well as the first on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks . However, Madonna’s performance during the Confessions Tour 2006 caused a controversy, as the singer appeared in the image of Christ , wearing a crown of thorns and was allegedly crucified on a giant mirror cross . A speech in Rome with this number was regarded by the clergy as an act of a hostile attitude towards the Roman Catholic Church .
