Biography
August Ashinger is the tenth of the eleven children of the cooper Andreas Ashinger (1807-1867) and his second wife Dorothea Götz. The father died early, and the eight children left with the mother had to take care of their food themselves. The elder brother Friedrich found work in Berlin and called the brothers August and Karl to him. In 1884, August Ashinger worked as a cook in Berlin. In April 1888, August Ashinger married in Helen Neumann in Berlin. In this marriage, the daughter of Elizabeth (d. 1949) and the son of Fritz (1894-1949) were born. For his wife’s dowry, Augustus opened his own inn next to the Battle of Sedan panorama on Alexanderplatz . The specific needs of the rushing customers served as a starting point for the idea of the future Ashinger enterprise.
In 1892, August, together with his brother Karl, founded the Ashinger company, which at the turn of the 20th century owned 23 beer halls, 15 pastry shops, 8 restaurants and other retail outlets and quickly moved to the largest gastronomic enterprise in Europe. Numerous cousins and other relatives of the Ashingers from Württemberg got a job in Berlin. In 1910, August Ashinger was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen Derdingen . A museum has been opened in the house where August Ashinger was born, his street also bears his name. August Ashinger is buried in the Luisenfriedhof Cemetery in Berlin.
