Biography

His elder brother, Lukash Kharatyk , was also involved in shot put (personal record 18.82 m), but Michal himself came to the athletics club only at the age of 17 on the advice of his grandmother [1] . At the junior level, he did not differ in high results, not getting on the podium even at the national level.

Progress began with changes to the shot put technique. In 2014, Michal moved away from the traditional whip in favor of a circular mach, and this was the beginning of his rapid take-off in the world elite. A year later, he became second in the Polish championship with a personal record of 19.95 m [2] .

In the winter of 2016, Kharatyk showed the best result of the season in the world at competitions in Lodz - 21.35 m [3] . Further in the history of Poland, the core was pushed only by two-time Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski . At the first start in his career for the national team, the indoor indoor championship , it was not possible to repeat this result - only 19.48 m and 14th place.

In the summer season continued to show good results. He came to the European Championship in Amsterdam as the leader of the European season, led in the finals and eventually lost only to the current champion David Storl from Germany [4] .

He participated in the 2016 Olympics , but could not overcome the qualification.

In the summer of 2017, for the first time in his career, he won the Polish championship, and also set a personal record of 21.88 m. He participated in the World Cup , where he took fifth place in the final (21.41 m) - 5 centimeters was not enough for the bronze medal.

In February 2018, he won the national championship with his best indoor result - 21.47 m. At the winter world championship , in one of the strongest finals in history, with an attempt at 20.69 m he took only 10th place.
