Merekhany

Probably, the mehkhanas inhabited Nitra , and the marharias inhabited Moravia .

Merekhany is a tribe mentioned in the Bavarian geographer . They are often associated with the Marharia (moraves), but some scholars believe that these were separate tribes.

In the 9th century, in the description of communities and regions north of the Danube , which lists the peoples living along the borders of the East Frankish kingdom in order from North to South, it is mentioned that the Marcharias (Moravians) [1] [2] have 11 communities [3] . The document places Markhariyev between Bechemairas (Bohemians) and Uulgaria (commoners), and also mentions Merekhanov with 30 communities [2] .

Versions

Gavlik believed that the existing manuscript is a consolidated version, consisting of notes made by a number of authors in different years - this is why the Moraves are mentioned twice in the text: first, as Marharii, and then as Merekhany. He believed that information about the Markharias and their 11 common ones was given at the time between 817 and 843, and information about the Merekhanas shows the actual state at the time of the reign of Svyatopolk I [4] .

Unlike Gavlik, Steinhubel, together with Treshtik and Vlasto, correlate Merekhan with the inhabitants of the Principality of Nitra [5] [6] [7] .

The third point of view is presented by Pyuspeki Nadem and Senga, who believe that 30 Merekhan communities testify to the existence of another Moravia in Central Europe [2] [8] [9] .

According to Komatin, they lived in the valleys of modern Moravia in Serbia , and were not yet subjugated by the Bulgarians [10] . However, after 845 the Bulgars annexed these Slavs to their communities (they were last mentioned in 853) [11] .
