Pribotnia is a historical region in northern Finland , associated with the Karelian settlement zone and the influence of Veliky Novgorod . In Finnish-language sources it is referred to as Pohjanlahti [1] . Russian influence in Pribotniya can be traced back to the 13th century and weakening towards the 16th century [2] . The Scandinavian chronicles tell of a clash of Kvens ( em ) and Karelians in the 9th century on the northeastern coast of the Gulf of Bothnia (the Kayan Sea ), however, they were finally fixed in Pribotniya only in the 12th century . Karelians advanced from the Karelian Isthmus by water through the Saimaa Lakes and at the same time acted as allies of Veliky Novgorod. An important center of Pribotnia was Oulu , and the territory itself was located between the Ovla and Kem rivers. In the XIV century, with the construction of Uleaborg, Karelia and Novgorod lost access to the Gulf of Bothnia. In the sixteenth century, after Pribotniya became part of Sweden, local Karelians ( Kayans ) migrated east to the territory of modern North Karelia [3] . Subsequently, it was the historical province of Ostrobothnia .
