Biography
He joined the national team in 1951. At the Summer Olympic Games in Helsinki (1952), he won gold in the four-wing and four-wheel steering competitions as part of the national team (the crew included Meita, Jiri Gavlis , Jan Indra , Stanislav Lusk , and the steering Miroslav Koranda ).
In the preliminary round of the competition (July 20), the Czechoslovak crew took first place (7: 16.6), ahead of the crews of Norway, the Netherlands and Japan, showing the best time of the day. In the semifinal on July 21, Czechoslovakians (6: 58.5) were ahead of the crews of Switzerland (6: 59.2), Great Britain (7: 04.1) and the USSR (7: 11.6). And in the final, on July 23, Czechoslovakia with a score of 7: 33.4 confidently outperformed the more experienced crews of the Swiss, Americans and British and the Finns who unexpectedly made it to the finals. This gold was the first in the history of rowing in Czechoslovakia.
He was the winner of the European rowing championship in Copenhagen (1953) and the bronze medalist in Amsterdam (1954).
His son, Karel Meita Jr., also became a rower and was a finalist at the Summer Games in Montreal (1976) and Moscow (1980).
