Construction
Design
The original concept was created by Eric Van Egeraat , a Dutch architect who designs mainly in Russia and Germany. His project, which includes a stadium and hockey Arena inside the bowl of the former Dynamo stadium, won the competition. The competition also involved projects from Perkins Eastman, Populus and Gerkan, Marg & Partners. Some elements of these projects can be used in the final version [2] . The final design of the new stadium was designed by American architect David Manika. Adaptation and support of the project until the successful implementation is the architectural bureau SPEECH, headed by Sergey Choban .
The commercial part of the project would include the construction of office and residential buildings, the Hyatt Hotel and multi-level underground parking. The total area of the sports part of the project was supposed to be more than 200 thousand m², the total area of commercial space - more than 450 thousand m². In total, the project, sponsored by SPEECH and TPO “Reserve”, plans to build 246 thousand m² of offices, 167 thousand m² of apartments, 37 thousand m² of hotel space, 10 thousand m² of retail space, and a parking lot designed for 2,543 cars.
History
The stadium was included in the application of Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup [3] . However, at the end of September 2012, FIFA announced the list of host cities and stadiums, in which the VTB Arena - the Central Dynamo Stadium was not included [4] . This step did not come as a surprise, as it turned out that Otkritie Arena would be commissioned much earlier - in 2014.
Cost
In November 2012, the chairman of the board of directors of VTB Arena, Andrei Peregudov, said that the construction of a sports facility - two halls together with parking - will cost about 650–700 million dollars, and the whole complex with adjoining infrastructure - $ 1.5 billion [5 ] .
In June 2013, the former head of the Board of Trustees of Dynamo, Sergei Stepashin, said that the cost of building a football stadium would be about 9 billion rubles, and the total cost of the sports part of the project, which includes a football stadium, the Sports Academy, a leisure and entertainment complex, underground passages from subway stations to the sports complex, parking for more than 1,500 parking spaces and other technical structures - 26 billion [6] .
It was planned to finance the construction at the expense of VTB Bank and investments of a number of foreign banks ( Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP), Intesa Sanpaolo , Société Générale , KfW IPEX-Bank ) [7] .
Opening
On November 27, 2018, the reconstruction of the sports facility was completed and he received permission for commissioning. The stadium opened with an ice show on December 20, the first match on the small arena took place on January 4, and the first football match was scheduled for March 10, 2019 [8] .
At the end of February 2019, it turned out that the match of the 19th round of the Russian Football Championship scheduled for March 10, in which Dynamo should have taken Spartak at the stadium in Petrovsky Park, which had opened after years of reconstruction, would be transferred to another arena. This statement was made by the Russian Premier League (RPL), whose experts recognized the lawn costing almost $ 700 million Dynamo stadium unsuitable for use.
The opening of the football part of VTB Arena took place on May 26, 2019 as part of the match of the 30th round of the Russian Premier League Dynamo - Arsenal (Tula) , after the RFU commission accepted the completely replaced lawn at the stadium [9] [10] . Over 23 thousand people came to the first football match at the new stadium. Before the match, a gala concert was held in the arena with the presentation of a new anthem of a football club, written by Nikolai Arutyunov [11] .
