Biography
One of the first missionaries and bishops in Bavaria . He lived first as a hermit in his homeland; about 718 , dedicated to the bishops by Pope Gregory II , went to Freising ( Bavaria ) to the duke Grimoald II , where he preached and built churches. He demanded Grimoald's divorce from Pilitruda and, in order to avoid revenge, fled to Tyrol . His remains in 769 were brought to Freising . The memory of St. Corbinian is celebrated in Munich and Freising on November 20, in Bozen and Brixen on September 9; elsewhere on September 8th . The relics of the saint are in Freising, in the crypt of the cathedral .
St. Corbinian's Bear
Legend has it that when Corbinian traveled to Rome , a bear attacked him and killed his horse. As punishment, the saint made the bear accompany him the rest of the way instead of his pack animal. Arriving in Rome, Corbinian freed the bear from this task, and he returned to Bavaria. This story is interpreted in the sense that "Christianity pacified and tamed the wildness of paganism and thus laid the foundation of a great civilization in the duchy of Bavaria." At the same time, the bear of Corbinian, as the beast of beasts of God, symbolizes the burden of service. An image of the Corbinian bear can be seen on the coat of arms of Pope Benedict XVI and on the coat of arms of the city of Freising .
