Biography
Born on July 4, 1933 in the city of Leningrad [2] .
In 1956 he graduated with honors from the Geological Faculty of Moscow State University . He stayed to work at the Geological Faculty of Moscow State University. He gave lectures on the courses “Structural Geology and Geological Mapping”, “Historical Geology”, “Geology of the USSR”, “General Geology”, “Tectonics and Magmatism”, “Planet Earth” (for masters). He participated in the Crimean geological practice for students.
In 1964, he defended his Ph.D. (was devoted to the Pliocene-Quaternary volcanism of the Greater Caucasus), and in 1980 he got his doctoral dissertation (subject: “Cenozoic volcanism of the Alpine belt of Eurasia”) in the field of geological and mineralogical sciences, in 1986 he was awarded the title of professor .
Since 1986 - Head of the Department of Dynamic Geology, Geological Faculty, Moscow State University.
His research interests are regional geology and geological survey, orogenic volcanism and its relationship with tectonics and geodynamics.
Engaged in regional geology, neotectonics, structural geology, seismotectonics, collisional magmatism. The main scientific results were obtained on orogenic volcanism of the Alpine belt of Eurasia, and especially of the Caucasus and the Carpathians, where for the first time a detailed stratigraphy of volcanogenic sequences, their tectonic position, connection with geodynamics was revealed. It was established that it was the sub-meridional compression of the Caucasus, due to the northward protrusion of the Arabian plate, which caused the presence of meridionally oriented stretch zones and stretch stretch sites, which are associated with calc-alkaline volcanism, first distinguished into a special - collisional type. A similar pattern was established for the entire Alpine belt, with the exception of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Cycladic island arc in the Aegean Sea. A weighty achievement was the solution of the problem of acid ignimbrites for many regions of the Alpine belt, including the identification of the distribution of these rocks, the establishment of their genesis. Much attention was paid to the study of the development and formation of the modern structure of advanced troughs, including the Terek-Caspian, where the rootless nature of anticlinal folds was first established and the mechanism of their formation was identified in the context of the regional development of the Caucasus.
He pays a lot of attention to the issues of neotectonics, seismotectonics, the problem of modeling “blind” thrusts and breakdown zones in the strata of different competencies, as well as the use of remote sensing methods to solve the problems of neotectonics.
He has lectured at universities in Greece, the Netherlands, Norway, Mexico, Germany, Bulgaria, Canada, Hungary and others, the oil companies of Israel and the USA. He has compiled a geology program for schools, published a book for schoolchildren “Geology is Interesting,” and with his participation and under his editors published the volume “Geology” of the Children's Encyclopedia.
Under his leadership, defended 18 master's and 3 doctoral dissertations [ when? ] .
