DistributionNorth America ( Canada , USA [1] [2] .
DescriptionLength about 1 cm, but sizes vary greatly: workers from 3.5 mm to 7.5 mm, females from 4 to 10 mm. The coloring of the working ants is brownish-black [3] [4] . Antennae 12-segmented in females and workers and 13-segmented in males. The stalk between the chest and the abdomen in all castes consists of one segment of the petiol [1] .
They live in prairies and forests [5] . Families are small (up to several hundred ants), anthills in rotten wood [2] . Associated with myrmecophilic caterpillars of the spring Lycaena butterfly [6] .
SystematicsIt was first described in 1893 by the Italian entomologist Carl Emery under the original name Camponotus marginatus var. nearcticus Emery, 1893 [4] . Since 1925 it has been included in the subgenus Myrmentoma (Emery, 1925b: 117.) [7] . It was also previously considered as a subspecies of Camponotus fallax [8] or Camponotus caryae [9] species. Since 1950, in an independent species status [1] .
