Duña ( Spanish dueña literally “mistress, mistress”), in Spain and in Spanish -speaking countries, is an elderly woman, usually an old maid , the teacher of a girl or a young woman noblewoman who accompanies her and monitors her behavior everywhere. The Spanish queens also had duenches.
In a broader sense - an elderly woman watching someone or running a household.
The image of a duany in art
In the XX century, cinema more than once turned to the image of a duen. As a rule, it was a comic image.
In 1946 in Leningrad at the Opera and Ballet Theater. S. M. Kirov , the world premiere of S. S. Prokofiev ’s lyric-comic opera “ Duenna ”, which was later called “Betrothal in a Monastery” [1] [2], took place .
In 1971, director Gerard Uri made the film “ Mania of Greatness ”, in which the image of Don Juan, the duo of the Spanish Queen, was created. Donna Juana mistakenly thought that Ruy Blaz was in love not with the queen, but with her, which created many comic situations.
In 1978, the Soviet film Duenya (an adaptation of the play by Richard Sheridan in 1775) was released, in which the active duet Dorothea ( Tatyana Vasilyeva ) decides to take hold of the wealthy money-lender Mendoso, for whom they want to give her pupil Inessa, and at the same time help Inessa to marry for Antonio, whom she loves.
