Biography
Born into a rich peasant family. He graduated from high school in Mitau , and in 1910 - Moscow Commercial Institute .
He worked in Moscow , Petrograd , Voronezh . In 1918 he returned to Lithuania, was engaged in journalism. In the same year he was elected to the Lithuanian Tariba and included in its financial commission. In March-April 1919, he served as Minister of Finance in the government of Pranas Dovidaitis , in December of the same year he was one of the organizers of the first national bank, the Lithuanian Trade and Industry Bank, since 1920 he headed its office in Memele .
In February 1922 he again became Minister of Finance and held this post in four governments in a row, representing the Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party . In this position he led the introduction in December 1922 of the national currency - Lita . On February 4, 1925, he also took the post of prime minister, but already on September 25 of that year, he was forced to resign, having been criticized for trying to create preferential conditions for Polish wood suppliers in Klaipeda for the development of the wood processing industry. After the coup organized by Smetona , he retired from politics, but in 1932 he was sentenced to two years in prison for cooperating with Poland as prime minister and was released under amnesty six months later. He continued to engage in banking.
After the establishment of the Soviet government on July 29, 1940, he was arrested in Kaunas , soon transferred to Ukhtpechlag , where he was later shot after disturbances among prisoners.
