The eighth and final season of the fantasy drama series Game of Thrones , which premiered on HBO on April 14, 2019 [1] [2] , consists of 6 episodes, unlike previous seasons. This is due to the lack of material for adaptation in the 10-serial format, and also due to the fact that the budget of each series of season 8 is higher than the budget of the series of previous seasons [3] . The eighth season is the third season, based on drafts [4] and ahead of the book cycle “ A Song of Ice and Fire ” [5] [6] , and mainly tells about events that are not in the book series of George Martin [7] [8] [ 9] . The eighth season is filming a draft of the second half of the last book of the song “ A Song of Ice and Fire ” under the working title “ Dreams of Spring ”, which was not completed by George Martin before writing the scripts for the series of the last season [10] [11] [12] (the book will be completed after the release of the final season of the series) [13] [14] [15] .

This season, compared to the previous ones, received mixed reviews from critics, negative reviews from viewers and has the lowest ratings for episodes on the websites of Rotten Tomatoes , Metacritic and IMDb . A simplified story, a shorter duration of the season, as well as many scenario decisions by the creators of the series, were criticized, despite the fact that the acting and visualization were praised.
Story
The eighth season is a direct continuation of the events that occurred in the final of season 7 . The north accepts Daenerys Targaryen and the dragons, and the Royal Harbor accepts the Golden Swords. The White Walkers move toward Winterfell [16] .

Production
The producers of the television series David Benioff and Dan Weiss from the very beginning intended to film the entire series of books “ A Song of Ice and Fire ”, if the HBO channel gives them such an opportunity. According to their calculations, the material of the books is enough to create a series of 80 watch episodes, or eight 10-episode seasons. [28]
On March 13, 2014, it was reported that Benioff and Weiss know the fate of almost all the characters and plan to complete the series with the seventh season, [29] [30] however, in July 2015, the executive producer of the series, Michael Lombardo, announced that the series would end in the eighth season. [31] In a January 2016 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lombardo announced that HBO would extend the series for the seventh and eighth seasons, with the last eighth season not expanding to 12 or 13 episodes (as George R. R. Martin originally suggested, since third, fifth, sixth and seventh books of the PL&O cycle are larger than the rest) [32] or divided into two parts, like the other HBO series “ The Soprano Clan ”, as well as the AMC series Breaking Bad and Mad Men . [33]
On April 14, 2016, Benioff and Weiss stated in an interview for Variety that only 13 episodes were planned for the last two seasons. Since the seventh season consists of 7 episodes, the 8th season will consist of 6 episodes [34] [35] lasting approximately 54 to 82 minutes [36] [37] .
On July 30, 2016, after the release of the sixth season, the series was officially extended to the last eighth season [38] [39] .
On September 27, 2017, Variety portal sources reported that HBO plans to spend more than $ 15 million per episode [40] . The entire season will cost HBO about $ 90-100 million. [41] By television standards, these are huge expenses that are comparable to blockbusters. [42] [43]
On November 1, 2018, the new release of Entertainment Weekly announced the idea of a final consisting of three full-length films lasting 120 minutes each, however, HBO executives refused this idea in favor of a six-episode season [44] [45] .
On November 14, 2018, the director of three episodes of the final season, David Nutter, confirmed the information that the episodes will be longer than 60 minutes [46] .
Team
The team of screenwriters of the last season, as well as in the fifth, sixth and seventh seasons, includes executive producers and show runners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss (episodes 3-6), producer Brian Cogman (episode 2) and Dave Hill (episode 1) [47] . In August 2015, George R. R. Martin stated that he most likely would not write a single script for “Game of Thrones” (he wrote scripts on average for one out of ten episodes of the 1-4 seasons), as he needed to focus on completion of the book cycle “ Song of Ice and Fire ” [48] . The team of directors of the eighth season consists of David Nutter (episodes 1, 2 and 4), Miguel Sapochnik (episodes 3 and 5), David Benioff and D. B. Weiss (episode 6) [17] [18] [49] .
Script
Benioff and Weiss emphasized that they did not intend to postpone the last seasons of the television series for several years so that the writer George R. R. Martin could finish the last books. At the beginning of 2017, of the seven novels planned in the book series, only five were published, and the writing of the last of them, namely “ Dance with the Dragons, ” took six years. The writer told Benioff and Weiss information about the planned plots of unfinished books and the intended ending - including in case he himself dies before he can finish the book series. [50] The producers consider it possible, though undesirable, that the television series will end before the last book is published. [51]
In March 2015, David Benioff and Dan Weiss stated that the fifth season is an adaptation of the latest published books of the Song of Ice and Fire series, so the game Game of Thrones TV series will have serious differences from the last books, starting from the sixth season, but the ending story the lines in the series will be approximately the same as in the last book of the cycle “ Song of Ice and Fire ” [52] [53] .
Due to the fact that George R. R. Martin did not start writing the book “ Dreaming of Spring ” by 2017, the last season will contain either original material or unpublished [54] . According to the sixth and seventh seasons, the eighth season is based on conversations between screenwriters and George Martin [55] [56] . On February 19, 2016, George Martin announced that material from the book “ Winds of Winter ” would not be used in the final season of the series [57] .
On June 28, 2017, David Benioff and Dan Weiss stated that the scripting for the episodes of the last season was completed [58] . Actor Nikolai Koster-Waldau recently told that the directors gave him and the rest of the actors a self-destructing script.
On September 18, 2018, at the Emmy ceremony, George Martin said that he did not exclude the difference between the endings of the series and the book cycle [59] .
From the new release of Entertainment Weekly in November 2018, it became known that after the second season of the series, George Martin told David Benioff and Dan Weiss not only about the fate of the characters, but also about the final battle between people and the army of the dead [44] [45] .
On November 22, 2018, Vladimir Furdik (King of the Night) announced that a large-scale battle will take place in the third episode of the last season [60] .
Filming
Filming of the eighth season began on October 23, 2017 [61] [62] . On December 6, 2017, Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) reported that filming of the eighth season could end in June or July 2018 [63] .
May 25, 2016 it became known that the filming of the seventh and eighth seasons will be carried out in the Canary Islands [64] . The search for locations for the filming of the last season began in February 2017 [65] . On December 28, 2017, actor Ben Crompton, who plays the head of the Black Castle Addison Toletta in the series, said that filming for season 8 was suspended and will continue next year. On January 17, 2018, filming continued in Belfast [66] . On February 8, it became known that Keith Harington was spotted filming in Dubrovnik, where he was just filming scenes of the Royal Harbor.
On June 8, 2018, information appeared that the filming could end in July 2018 [67] . On June 23, 2018, the wedding of Keith Harington (John Snow) and Rose Leslie (Igritt) took place, which was attended by some leading actors who had already completed filming in the final season [68] . Nikolai Koster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) said in an interview with Variety that the filming of the series has not yet been completed [69] . On July 6, 2018, Macy Williams (Arya Stark) confirmed the completion of filming for the final season [70] [71] [72] . On July 10, 2018, Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) also confirmed the completion of filming for the final season [73] .

Actors whose contracts were renewed for season 8 on June 21, 2016: Peter Dinklage ( Tyrion Lannister ), Nikolai Koster-Waldau ( Jaime Lannister ), Lena Headey ( Cersei Lannister ), Emilia Clark ( Daenerys Targaryen ), Keith Harington ( John Snow ) . Their salary was increased from $ 300,000 for one episode of the fifth and sixth season to $ 500,000 for one episode of the seventh and eighth season [74] . On November 18, 2016, their salary was increased to $ 1,100,000 per episode for the seventh and eighth seasons [75] . On April 25, 2017, their salary was increased to £ 2,000,000, that is, up to $ 2,600,000 per episode for the seventh and eighth seasons [76] [77] .
In the final season, Jacob Anderson (Gray Worm), who played a minor role since the third season, was transferred to the main cast. Anton Lesser (Quibern), who has played a secondary role since the third season, received the status of a guest actor in the final season, whose name in the credits is separate, but was not included in the main composition.
Tobias Menzies (Edmoor Talley), Lino Fasiol (Robin Arren) and Josephine Gillan (Marei) returned to the series after being absent in the seventh season [44] [45] . Mark Rissmann played Harry Strickland, leader of the Golden Swords this season [78] .
On September 13, 2017, HBO announced the start of casting for the last season of the series [79] .

Release
Since the series has long been ahead of the book series, the script for the final season was actually written from scratch, which somewhat delayed the production process. In addition, the creators of the series were waiting for ideal climatic conditions for filming; At one time, this led to the fact that the premiere of the seventh season was postponed for several months. Given that the scale, as well as the duration of the episodes of the eighth season is much longer, the shooting process took more than 8 months. Filming of the last season ended in July 2018. However, given the fact that the number of battle scenes and CGI will be the largest in the entire history of the series, the creation of the final series took longer than planned. Therefore, viewers will see the season only at the beginning of 2019. [80]
On July 25, 2018, HBO President Casey Bloys announced that the final season would premiere in the first half of 2019 [81] . Game of Thrones special effects supervisor Joe Bower said the eighth season will be released later than expected. The premiere of the six-episode last season will most likely take place at the end of May or in June 2019. [82] James Hibberd later stated that the final season would possibly qualify for the 2019 Emmy Award, which means that the show of the eighth season will, at best, begin on April 21, 2019. [83] [84] [85]
On November 13, 2018, it was announced on the series’s official Twitter page that the premiere of season 8 would be held in April 2019. [86]

Weiss have proven to be sadly incompetent authors when they don’t have the source material (that is, books) that could be accessed,” “This series deserves the final season which makes sense. " The basis for the creation of the petition was a lot of points that were not accepted by the fans of the series, their main list includes: the inability to see the battle of Winterfell, the relatively easy death of the King of the Night and the swift turn of Daenerys to the Mad Queen, followed by the burning of the Royal Harbor. [105]
As of May 21, 2019, the petition has collected more than 1.4 million signatures. [106] [107]
