Rudolph IV was the eldest son of Margrave Herman VII and his wife, Agnes von Truendingen, and ruled initially with his brother Frederick . Subsequently, however, the division of his father’s inheritance followed, so that Baden and Eberstein got Friedrich, while Rudolph got the administration of Pforzheim, among other things, where he arranged his residence, as a result of which Rudolph IV is also known in the literature as Rudolph of Baden-Pforzheim ( German Rudolf IV. Von Baden zu Pforzheim ).
In the struggle of Friedrich the Beautiful with Ludwig of Bavaria for the German throne, he, like his brother Friedrich, was on the side of the Hapsburg party, and actively supported Leopold of Austria during the siege of Speyer in March 1315. Later, Rudolph IV went over to the side of King Ludwig IV and, in gratitude, received Ortenberg Castle from him, as well as the cities of Offenburg , Gengenbach and Zell, as well as other imperial possessions in Ortenau .
Family
Rudolph was first married to Luitgard von Bolanden ( German: Luitgard von Bolanden ), widow of Count Albrecht von Löwenstein ( German: Albrecht von Löwenstein-Schenkenberg , d.1304), illegitimate son of King Rudolph I , and again after her death, again Maria von Oettingen ( German: Maria von Oettingen ), with whom he had two children:
- Frederick III (1327-1353), Margrave of Baden-Pforzheim from 1348
- Rudolph V (d. 1361), Margrave of Baden-Pforzheim since 1348
Died on June 25, 1348, Frederick IV was buried in the Lichtental monastery in modern Baden-Baden .
