Dimitrios James Marantis ( Greek Δημήτριος Μαράντης , born Demetrios James Marantis ; born May 28, 1968 , Harrison , New York , USA ) [1] [2] [3] - American attorney and civil servant , Deputy ( 2009 - 2013 ) and the acting sales representative of the United States (March-May 2013 ). Member of the Democratic Party . Currently, he is senior vice president of global GR-activities of the multinational company Visa (since 2015 ) and a member of the Board of Directors of the Private Foreign Investment Corporation [4] .

Biography

Education

Born May 28, 1968 in Harrison , ( New York , USA ) in a Greek family [5] [6] [7] .

He attended Harrison State High School .

In 1990, he graduated from Princeton University with a bachelor of arts degree in public relations and international relations [2] .

In 1993, he received a doctorate in law from Harvard University Law School [2] .

Career

In 1993-1998, he worked for the largest US lobbying company, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld , in Washington and the Brussels-Capital Region ( Belgium ) [2] .

In 1998-2002, he served in the Office of the US Trade Representative as his deputy chief adviser. During this period, he was responsible for trade negotiations and information in Asia and Africa , including through the Trans-Pacific Partnership , Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Sino-US Joint Trade Commission, and others. He negotiated the provisions of trade agreements and represented the United States in the World Trade Organization as part of its dispute resolution procedures [8] [9] .

In 2002-2004, he served as the chief legal adviser to the US-Vietnamese Trade Council [10] , and therefore lived in Hanoi , contributing to the development of US-Vietnamese trade relations [11] [12] [13] .

In July-November 2004 he was the head of dispute resolution for the candidate for the post of vice president of the United States John Edwards during the election campaign of John Kerry , who participated in the presidential election from the Democratic Party [14] .

In 2005-2009, he served on the Senate Finance Committee, holding the post of chief legal adviser on international trade . He assisted the chairman of the committee, Max Bocus, in negotiations with members of the Republican Party on expanding the federal assistance program in the sectoral settlement. The oldest member of the committee, Republican Charles Grassley expressed appreciation to Marantis for his efforts [14] .

In 2009-2013, he again served in the Office of the US Trade Representative as his deputy [6] , being responsible for discussing the terms of trade agreements and negotiating tariffs and copyrights with China . He played a key role in the negotiations on the US-Korean trade agreement and its adoption by the US Congress , as well as at the APEC summit, led the conclusion of the first ever agreement to reduce tariffs on environmental goods [8] .

In March-May 2013, he served as Acting Trade Representative of the United States [9] [15] .

In 2013-2015, he worked for Square , a technology company, where he directed work on international strategy and regulatory issues [16] [17] .

Since October 2015, he has served as senior vice president of global GR-activities of the multinational company Visa [18] .

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Corporation for Private Foreign Investments [19] .
