Formation History

The historical predecessor of the unit is the 31st Panzer Corps , formed on May 28, 1943 on the eve of the Battle of Kursk . The corps included the 100th, 242nd and 237th tank brigades, the 367th Guards heavy self-propelled artillery regiment. The corps received baptism of fire in the morning of July 6, 1943 during a defensive operation in the Oboyaninsky direction during the Battle of Kursk.

The new formations included two tank battalions: the first two-armed and the second three-armed personnel, as well as a motorized rifle battalion (a company of machine gunners and a company of shooters), an anti-aircraft battery, an anti-tank artillery battery, a control company, a technical support company and a medical platoon. The new brigades each had 43 T-34 tanks, and 12-17 T-70 and T-60 tanks each. [eight]

The soldiers were especially proud of the fact that part of the combat vehicles of the 237th and 242nd tank brigades were donations. On the towers of the tank brigades was written "Tambov collective farmer" and "Vologda collective farmer." Fighting vehicles were built at their own expense by collective farmers - the founders of the patriotic movement of fundraising for the construction of tank columns and air squadrons. [eight]

Among the operations in which the corps participated were the Battle of Kursk , Korsun-Shevchenkovskaya , Lviv-Sandomierz , Karpatsk-Duklinsk , Vistula-Oder , Lower and Upper Silesian , Moravian-Ostrava offensive operations , as well as the liberation of cities and villages of eastern and western Ukraine , Poland , Czechoslovakia , such as Kharkov , Vinnitsa , Sandomierz , Breslau , Olomouc , Prague .

For crossing the Vistula River and the military unit was awarded the honorary title "Wislen", for the possession of the German fortress Breslau awarded the Order of the Red Banner, for the capture of the city of Hindenburg - the Order of Suvorov II degree, and the cities of Ratibor , Bislau - the Order of Kutuzov II degree [9] .

At the end of the war, the corps was reorganized into the 31st Panzer Division, with the preservation of its conditional and honorary titles. From July 1946 to August 1968 the division was stationed in the city of Proskurov (now Khmelnitsky ) of the Carpathian Military District , where it was part of the 38th combined arms army of the district. In the fall of 1956, the 100th Tank Regiment of the division was sent to Hungary to strengthen the Special Corps , where it took an active part in the battles in Budapest .

In August 1968, the 31st Panzer Division, under the command of Major General A.P. Yurkov, was introduced to Czechoslovakia , where it remained part of the newly formed Central Group of Forces , joining the 28th Army Corps. The location of the division of Bruntal [10] .

At the time of the division’s withdrawal, it had a state-owned tank fleet, and the 752nd motorized rifle regiment had only headquarters, and therefore the 47th Guards Tank Division , withdrawn from the GSVG , was merged with the division in a new location and therefore by July 1997 year . the division was reorganized into the 3rd motorized rifle. Historically, the division inherits awards and honorary titles of the 31st Panzer Corps .

Most of the units of the newly formed division as part of the group of MBO troops in the North Caucasus took an active part in the hostilities in the Second Chechen Campaign from 1999-2001. and successfully completed all the tasks. For courage and bravery shown during the elimination of illegal armed groups, orders and medals were awarded to more than 3,000 military personnel. Eight of them were awarded the high title of Hero of Russia. This is Colonel A. Korolkov and Colonel S. Morozov , Lieutenant Colonel V. Vasiliev (posthumously), Major S. Taranets (posthumous), Captain O. Tibekin (posthumous), Captain V. Zavraisky , Captain A. Khamitov , Senior Lieutenant P. Zakharov (posthumously). [eight]

By the end of the 1990s. the division was one of the most equipped and combat-ready formations of the Russian Ground Forces.

According to the results of 2004, the division was recognized as one of the best formations of the Moscow Military District.

During the period of the military reform of 2008-2010. The 752nd motorized rifle regiment of the division was reorganized into the 9th separate motorized rifle brigade, which inherited all the awards and honorary names of the 3rd motorized infantry division, the 100th tank regiment was reorganized into the 6th separate tank regiment of the Czestochowa Red Banner, the order of Kutuzov’s divisional brigade .

The division was recreated by reforming the 9th separate motorized rifle of the Vistula, Red Banner, orders of the Suvorov and Kutuzov brigades and the 23rd separate guard Petrokovskaya twice of the Red Banner, the orders of Suvorov, Kutuzov and Bogdan of the Khmelnitsky Volga Cossack brigade .
