History
In 1857, the Winsor parish priest, Pierre Pointe, founded the Assumption College , the purpose of which was to teach the humanities. In 1858, the college charter was formulated. Until 1919, the college was managed by various Catholic organizations, and its program mainly consisted of courses aimed at training future seminarians [1] .
In 1919, Ascension College became a branch of Western University in London (Ontario) (since 1923, the University of Western Ontario ); he retained this status until 1953 [1] , when the legislature of Ontario granted him the status of a separate university. In 1954, Ascension College received full membership in the National Conference of Canadian Universities, the Ontario University Education Council, and the British Commonwealth Association [2] . In 1956, the college was transformed into Ascension University , merging with Essex College, which taught in such areas as mathematics, physics, geology, nursing and business management. In 1962, the College of the Holy Names joined the Ascension University and shared the campus with it since 1950, and the University of Winsor was soon registered. In 1963 and 1964, the College of the Holy Savior, Canterbury College ( Anglican Church ) and Jona College ( United Church of Canada ) were added to its structure as branches. [1] Canterbury College was the first Anglican college in the world to be affiliated with the Catholic University. [2]
Winsor University was the first autonomous university in southwestern Ontario with academic degrees. The university rapidly grew in size - from 1,500 students in 1967 to 8,000 thousand in 1977 [2] . Since the formation of the University of Winsor, he has trained more than 100 thousand graduates [1] .
