A musical educational institution is an institution whose main activity is to teach a certain category of people to play musical instruments , singing , theory and history of music. Organizational forms, conditions and level of training depend on the goals, contingent, local traditions and other factors.
General information about music institutions
A musical educational institution can exist as a legally independent instance or be integrated into a larger educational organization in the form of its music department. It can train professional musicians or amateurs. The age of students is usually from 6-7 years. The program of classes is determined by age, as well as the available pre-training. Minimum starting requirements are always negotiated, often competitive selection is carried out. Musical institutions can be state, municipal or private , and training can be free or paid.
In relation to children, in contrast to the compulsory general education in all developed countries, music is optional.
Music schools in Russia
In Russia, since the times of the USSR, music clubs, studios and various schools have been operating for everyone who wants to acquire the initial skills in playing instruments. The main musical institutions for children 7-15 years old are district children's music schools or music departments of art schools that educate cultural music lovers. The best graduates continue their education in schools with a four-year term of study (usual age 16-19). For the most gifted children, immediately aimed at a musical career, there are special special music schools (age 7-17). At the end of such a special music school or college, you can enter a musical university - conservatory . There are also cultural institutes with faculties of art and music.
The term "music school" abroad
The most common name for a music educational institution abroad is the phrase “music school” (in the corresponding language: English music school , German Musikschule , French école de musique , etc.). However, it can mean not only an analogue of a children's music school in the Russian Federation, but also the institution of any other level of the international standard classification of education : from a circle for beginner kids to a conservatory. The ambiguity is due to a broader interpretation of the concept of “school” than in Russia. Of course, clarity is introduced from the minimum context, as well as through the words “children’s”, “higher”, etc., but in international communication it’s still useful to specify what kind of “school” it is in order to avoid misunderstandings.
