Dwingeloo 2 is a small irregular galaxy discovered in 1996 and located at a distance of about 10 million light-years from the Sun. The galaxy was discovered as part of the DOGS project ( Dwingeloo Obscured Galaxy Survey ) in the study of the avoidance zone . Dwingeloo 2 is a satellite galaxy of Dwingeloo 1 . [6]

Dwingeloo 2 was first detected in the radio spectrum in a neutral hydrogen radio line (21 cm) during observations after the discovery of Dwingeloo 1. [6] Dwingeloo 2 is considered to be a member of the galaxy group IC 342 / Maffei adjacent to the Local Group . [2] The galaxy is moving away from the Milky Way at a speed of about 241 km / s. [6]
The visible radius of Dwingeloo 2 is about 2 ' , which at a distance of about 3 Mpc corresponds to a radius of 2 kpc. [1] The galaxy has a pronounced rotating disk of neutral hydrogen, inclined at an angle of about 69 ° relative to the observer. The distribution of neutral hydrogen is rather heterogeneous. The presence of neutral hydrogen was detected at a distance of about 3.2 kpc from the center of the galaxy. The total mass of the galaxy within a given radius is 2.3 billion solar masses , which is 5 times less than the total mass of Dwingeloo 1; [6] The mass of neutral hydrogen is estimated at 100 million solar masses.
The irregular structure of Dwingeloo 2 appears to be related to interaction with the larger galaxy Dwingeloo 1, which is located 24 kpc from Dwingeloo 2. [6]
