Story
Troy Maxson, already a middle-aged African-American working-class father, is trying his best to provide for his family in America in the 1950s, while at the same time trying to come to terms with the events in his life and family.
Allegory in the title
The fence ( English Fence - a fence, a fence, a fence, a fence, a fence ), appearing in the title, is built in the film for several years and appears completed only closer to the end of the film in the third act. She was conceived by Troy as a symbolic way to restrain death, but also reflects the emotional barriers that he has built between himself and his sons, and is the result of Rose's efforts to maintain what she values. Production
Previous attempts to adapt Wilson’s Fences to the big screen were unsuccessful in part because of the author’s insistent demand for an African-American director. [7] In a 2013 interview with Empire, Denzel Washington expressed a desire to star in the film and act as a director in The Fences, and at the same time return to his role from the Broadway production of the 2010 play, which, like the film, was produced Scott Rudin. On January 28, 2016, it was announced that Rudin, Washington, and Todd Black would work on a film adaptation of the play, Washington would be the director, and Washington and Viola Davis would star in the movie, returning to their characters from a 2010 theater production that brought both of them Tony Award Actors. [9]
On April 4, 2016, the cast was joined by Mykelti Williamson, Giovan Adepo, Russell Hornsby, Stephen Henderson and Saniah Sydney, with Williamson, Hornsby and Henderson also returning to their roles from the 2010 theater production. [ten]

While Troy sees the fence as an allegory to keep the Grim Reaper away, his wife, Rose — played near flawlessly by Viola Davis, who will most likely win an Oscar for her performance — explains that fences keep certain things out, but more importantly, they keep the things we want in. Troy, a gifted baseball player, was fenced-out of the major leagues when he was young but was too old to strut his stuff when he emerged after a long stint in prison. Now, he sees fences everywhere.
