Description

A small, almost black look of caddis flies. The eyes are small and covered with thin long hairs. The first segment of the antennae is longer than the head. The maxillary palps of the males are reduced and do not reach the base of the antennae. The last two segments are very small and attach in front of the top of the first segment. Fore and hind wings are similar in structure and venation, long and narrow. In the fore wing, transverse veins C-Sc and Sc-R1 are developed. The discoid cell is reduced, small and very narrow. Spurs formula: 1,3,4. In the genitals of males, the edeagus and parameres are reduced [2] [4] . Larvae of Rossiana montana (up to 10 mm long) are found in flowing gravel deposits under moss; they build their houses from small pebbles [5] [1] .

Systematics

The species Rossiana montana was first described in 1953 by the American entomologist Donald Denning (Donald G. Denning; 1909–1988), initially as a member of the Limnephilidae family [1] [6] , and in 1997 it was singled out as a separate Rossianidae family [7] . The genus was named after the American professor Herbert Ross ( Herbert H. Ross ; 1908-1978; Illinois , USA ), a major entomologist and author of several monographs and books, including the well-known entomology guide A Textbook of Entomology, which has survived many reprints (1948, 1956, 1965, 1982), including in Russian (M., 1985) [8] [9] .
