Sports career
In 1956, together with Rolf Mulka , with whom he represented the North German Rowing Club (Norddeutschen Regatta Verein) from Hamburg throughout his career, he won the world champion title in the Flying Dutchman class of boats. At the Summer Olympics in Melbourne (1956), athletes were sixth in the class "Charpy." In 1957, the German duo won both the German championship and the world championship in the Flying Dutchman class of boats and was second in the continental championship. In 1959, athletes won the German championship again and became bronze medalists of the world championship.
At the Summer Olympics in Rome (1960), where the “Flying Dutchman” was included in the Olympic program for the first time, German yachtsmen won the bronze medal.
