Corinthians finished first in the regular season, gaining 46 points in 23 rounds and only one ahead of Palmeiras. The playoffs were held out of three matches. In the quarterfinals, Timau lost 0-2 in the first home game, but defeated Gremio twice in the guest and second home games - 1-0 each, going to the next stage [1] . In the semifinal confrontation with Santos, the outcome of the confrontation was decided by the best goal difference. The Pisces won 2-1 at home (Carlos Gamarra scored a goal for the guests) [2] , while Corinthians turned out to be stronger 2-0 on the Pakaemba on December 6 (goals scored by Marcelinho Carioca and Edilson) [3] . In the third game, the teams drew 1: 1 (Edilson scored at Corinthians) [4] .
In the final, Corinthians again, as the winner of the preliminary stage, received the right to hold two of the three games at home. The opponent was Cruzeiro, who took only seventh place in the Brazilian standings, but having experience of the recent victory in the 1997 Libertadores Cup . The first game of the "fox" was held at the Mineyran stadium. Cruzeiro successfully started the meeting, his players Mueller and Valdo Filo made the score 2-0 already in the middle of the match. But the substitution of Dynea turned the course of the meeting. At the 53rd minute he equalized, and three minutes later he took part in the attack, successfully completed by Marcelinho - 2: 2. In the second game, Marcelinho again with the transfer of Dynea opened the scoring, but Cruzeiro managed to reduce the result to a draw. The decisive meeting took place on December 23. For “Corinthians” in the second half, Edilson and Marcelinho scored, who scored from the show once again replacing Dynea - 2: 0 [5] .
