Halifax-class frigate frigates are a type of URO multi-purpose frigate , which has been in service with the Canadian Navy since 1992. The result of a program launched in the 1970s to replace obsolete destroyers of the Annapolis , Mackenzie , Restigos and Saint Laurent types. In addition to traditional anti-submarine weapons, ships carried the means to counter surface and air targets. The first of the twelve ships of the series was Halifax . The ships got their names in honor of the capitals or largest cities of ten Canadian provinces, as well as the cities of Ottawa and Montreal .

In 2007, the Canadian government announced plans to modernize the ships of the series. In November 2008, a group of companies led by Lockheed Martin Canada received a contract for the work. The planning of work was completed in November 2016 [1] , the modernization of all 12 ships should be completed in 2018.
In October 2011, it was also announced the development of a new project for a promising ship for the Canadian fleet, which would replace Halifax-type frigates and Iroquois-class destroyers . The construction of these ships is scheduled for the early 2020s.

Project
Work on the design of the ship was begun in 1977 as part of the Canadian Patrol Frigate Program with the aim of replacing obsolete destroyers in service with the fleet. In July 1983, the government approved a budget for the construction of the first series of six frigates. In December 1987, six more ships were ordered. Reflecting changes in the long-term fleet development strategy, the frigates were designed as multipurpose ships with a special emphasis on actions against submarines.
The displacement of frigates amounted to 4830 tons. The maximum length is 134.65 m, width - 16.36 m, draft - 4.98 m. In general, the ship turned out to be larger than Iroquois-class destroyers. The ship's mover is two adjustable-pitch propellers powered by the CODOG control unit, which includes two General Electric LM2500 gas turbine units and a SEMT Pielstick diesel engine. The ship has a speed of up to 29 knots. When driving on a diesel engine at a speed of 15 knots, the cruising range is 7000 miles.
Armament
To search and destroy submarines at a distance from the ship, the frigate carries on board the anti-submarine helicopter CH-124 Sea King . A helicopter can take off and land when waves are up to 6 points . To defeat submarines nearby, frigates are armed with Mark 46 anti-submarine torpedoes launched from two torpedo tubes.
Anti-ship armament consists of two four-container harpoon missile launchers located in the middle of the hull between the hangar and the pipe. Air defense is provided by missile launchers of the Sea Sparrow air defense system, and to repulse air attacks near the ship, it is armed with the Falank ZAK mounted on the roof of a helicopter hangar.
In the bow of the ship, a 57-mm Bofors SAK 57 artillery mount is installed, the rate of fire of the gun is 220 rounds per minute, and the firing range is 17 km.
The ships are armed with two Shield Mark 2 jamming systems manufactured by BAE Systems . There is a set of anti-torpedo protection AN / SLQ-25 Nixie .
Two fire control radars SPG-503 (STIR 1.8) manufactured by Thales Nederland are located on the roof of the bridge and on the platform in front of the hangar. The ships are also equipped with AN / SPS-49 airborne radar, Ericsson HC150 Sea Giraffe surface target radar and Kelvin Hughes type 1007 navigational radar.
