Name Etymology

Actaeon ( Greek mythology ) - the son of Aristeus and Avtonoi , a young man who disturbed the peace of the goddess Artemis . The angry goddess turned Actaeon into a deer , and his own dogs tore him apart.

Habitat and habitat

South and Central Europe , Asia Minor , the Middle East , Northwest Africa , the Canary Islands .

In the UK, local populations in Dorset . In Eastern Europe, the species is found in Slovakia , Hungary and Romania . In Belarus, it is found only in the south of the country, on the territory of the Pripyatsky Nature Reserve, where it was first discovered in the 1990s. It is found throughout Poland. In Ukraine, the species is known by its small finds in Volyn, Chernivtsi region, the Dniester canyon, and the southeastern part of the Carpathian region. On the territory of Russia there are no reliable finds of the species (although the species was cited for the Saratov region, Bashkiria and Voronezh region).

Butterflies inhabit forest edges, forest glades, roadsides in pine forests growing on sandy soils. There are reports of habitat in dry meadow plots of the chalk steppes. In Armenia, the species inhabits humid mountain landscapes on the southern arid saline slopes at an altitude of about 1500 m above sea level.

Biology

 

Butterflies develop in one generation. Flight time from early July to early August. After mating, the female lays one egg each on the dried leaves of the fodder plants. The caterpillar lives and hibernates in a folded leaf of cereals, where it pupates.

Fodder plants of caterpillars are various cereals: creeping wheatgrass , wheatgrass , tall ryegrass , pinnate short-legged, forest short-legged, short-legged, bonfire, terrestrial reed , bluegrass annual .
