Scientific activity

The largest scientific monument of this time is the serial development of Z. I. Yampolsky, a scientist who can be said to have devoted his entire scientific potential to the problems of research in ancient Azerbaijan. Per Yampolsky belongs to a number of interesting works on the history and culture of Caucasian Albania , published in Baku and Moscow.

These works shed light on the processes of historical development of both the socio-political and social system of Caucasian Albania, and the culture and art of this ancient state. It should be said that at a time when Yampolsky began to seriously become interested in the history and culture of Caucasian Albania, adequate conceptual principles related to this problem were not yet developed in Soviet science.

Even the famous Caucasian scholar K. Trever , who was considered one of the leading experts in the history of the material culture of Caucasian Albania, in her writings stated that the development of the artistic culture of Caucasian Albania has not yet been touched upon by anyone. Of course, under such conditions, the importance of Z.I. Yampolsky’s research is significantly increased, given that he had earlier begun to deal with the problems of antiquities of Azerbaijan.

One of the early works of Z. I. Yampolsky, covering this topic, is the book "From the History of Ancient Caucasian Albania", published in Moscow as early as 1949. This publication is an abstract of reports at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The central theme here is the problem of the existence of hierodules in Caucasian Albania - temple slaves sacrificed in honor of the ancient gods. Against the background of this problem, the author analyzes the socio-historical processes that contributed to the formation of artistic culture and aesthetic and philosophical thought of Caucasian Albania in the ancient, pre-Christian period.

In fact, the problem of the historical development of socio-political life and the material culture of Caucasian Albania was for Yampolsky the main scientific topic, the work of his life. In the 50-60s, the scientist released several books devoted to this topic.

The high scientific vocation of his books and articles, their importance in expanding knowledge of the history and culture of Caucasian Albania was noted by leading experts on the history of ancient Azerbaijan - I. Meshchaninov , K. Trever, N. Rzayev, D. Akhundov and others. These include, for example, articles “On a statue found in the territory of Caucasian Albania” (1955), “Monuments of Caucasian Albania on Mount Bashidag” (1960), and the book “Ancient Albania of the 3rd - 1st centuries. BC "(1962) and others. These and other works of the scientist were firmly established in the scientific environment of the Soviet Union in the 50-60s.
