In January 2017, the All-Russian Athletics Federation, on the instructions of the Ministry of Sports, excluded 5000 meters from the championship program, which determined the country's winter champions from 2007 [1] . A similar fate affected the 200-meter run, while the 4 × 200-meter relay race returned after four years of absence. Thus, in 2017, competitions in only 24 disciplines were held at the national championship - the minimum number in the history of the tournament. Shortly before the start of the tournament, distances of 200 and 5000 meters were included in the tournament schedule, but the title of national champions was not played in them: athletes participated in these disciplines in the All-Russian Competitions.
Due to the removal of the Russian team from international competitions due to a doping scandal , for the second year in a row at the Russian Championships, they did not qualify for international starts ( European Indoor Championships ). Officially, this became known on December 1, 2016, when the IAAF Council upheld the IDF’s disqualification [2] .
In the winter of 2017, Russian championships were also held in individual athletics disciplines [3] :
- January 21 - Russian indoor 1 mile championship ( Orenburg )
- February 15-17 - Russian Indoor All-Around Championships ( Smolensk )
