The icon of the Mother of God "of Constantinople" appeared in Constantinople in the 5th century . It is written as Hodegetria according to the iconography of the Apostle Luke . The icon is revered by the patroness of the city.
In subsequent centuries, many copies of the icon spread throughout the eastern Mediterranean . Not only Asia Minor , meridional Italy , where the icon, according to legend, defended Naples during the plague epidemic, as well as the siege of the city in 1528 during the Cognac League war, honors the image .
