Sports career
He performed simultaneously in sprinting and jumping disciplines. He was a seven-time champion of Belgium at a distance of 100 m (1978, 1979, 1982, 1984-1987), once won the 200-meter (1985) and ten times in the long jump (1975-1979, 1981-1984, 1986).
At the summer Olympic Games in Montreal (1976) in diving competitions, he failed to overcome the qualification, but two years later he won the silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Milan (1978). At the summer continental championship in Prague in the same year, he performed unsuccessfully - he did not manage to get out of qualification in the diving, and in the 4x400m relay race he became the eighth in the Belgian national team.
After fourth place at the European Winter Championships in Vienna (1979), gold followed at the European Indoor Championships in Sindelfingen (1980). However, due to the use of doping, he was deprived of this award.
In 1984, he won bronze in the championship of the continent in a room in Gothenburg at a distance of 60 m, but at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles (1984) he could not overcome the qualification in the 100-meter. He also became a bronze medalist at a distance of 60 m at the World Indoor Championships in Paris (1985) and on the Continental in Pira (1985). In 1986, he won the gold of the European Championship indoors in Madrid at the same sprint distance and in the summer competitions in Stuttgart reached the semifinals in the 100-meter.
The next success came to the athlete at the European Indoor Championships in Budapest (1988), where he won the silver medal in the 60m race.
His brother, Patrick Deruel, was a famous pole vaulter.
At the end of his sports career, he was engaged in the restaurant business in Thailand. Was found hanged at a hotel in Phuket on November 1, 2015.
