Biography

Rudolf I was the second son of the margrave Herman V and his wife Irmengard of Rhine, daughter of the palatine count Henry V.

Having inherited his father's inheritance together with his brother Hermann VI , Rudolf was already in 1247/1248 able to take full authority in his own hands, since Herman, through marriage with Gertrude von Babenberg, received the title of Duke of Austria and went to Vienna to defend his claims. After the death of Hermann in 1250 and the execution of his nephew (son of Hermann) Friedrich together with the last Staufen Conradin in Naples in 1268, Rudolph I had no competitors.

The marriage of Kunikunda Eberstein ( him. Kunigunde von Eberstein , ca. 1230-1284 or 1290) in 1257 brought Rudolf - as a dowry - half of the von Eberstein family clan; Rudolph bought it for the second half in 1283. In the XIV century, the Alt-Eberstein Castle served as a side residence of the Baden Margraves.

In 1250, at the request of Rudolph, work began on expanding the main residence, Hohenbaden Castle .

In 1268, Rudolf managed to acquire Libenek Castle ( German: Burg Liebeneck ) with the adjacent village of Würm (as part of the city of Pforzheim ) from the lords of von Weißenstein.

At the same time, Rudolf I was involved in numerous clashes with the counts of Württemberg , who claimed the Baden territory, and with the bishops of Strasbourg because of customs duties on the Rhine .

Margrave Rudolph is considered the patron saint of many churches and monasteries: among other things, on his initiative a side chapel dedicated to St. Catherine choir of the pilgrimage church in Biekesheim (composed of Durmersheim ) with its famous frescoes.

Deceased in 1288, Rudolf I was buried in the monastery Lichtental in modern Baden-Baden .
