Biography

Born in Faridpur, British India, she was one of ten children in a wealthy zamindar family in a village called Idilpur (now in Bangladesh ). Her family moved to Calcutta and Assam in the early forties, leaving land and property. In 1942, her parents moved to an apartment in Bombay. Gita was twelve, and she continued her studies at the Higher Bengal School.

Gita married director Guru Dutt on May 26, 1953. The couple had two sons: Tarun (born 1954) and Arun (born 1956), and daughter Nina (born 1963).

Career

A distinctive feature of Gita Dutt, which allowed her to bypass many contemporaries, was her unique ability to sing any song with an authentic tone, feeling, passion and emotion as required by the composition and scene that she accompanied. From bhajan to a club song, from an obsessive melancholy melody to a fun romantic number, she could go through a musical series, it would seem, without much effort. This unique versatility helped Geeta to occupy her niche and remain in it even when Lata Mangeshkar easily broke into the world of Indian off-screen performance, after the overwhelming success of the song “Aayega Aanewala” in the film Mahal (1949).
