Biography and career
Bernard Wesdon Mattox was born on January 13, 1928 in the city of Wendell in North Carolina. He entered the army after the end of World War II .
After leaving the army, he began working in theaters on the East Coast, where talent agents drew attention to him. In 1952, he made his debut on the wide screen in the movie Montana's Red Sky under the pseudonym Gregory Walcott . Then he starred in episodic roles in several films and got the role of deputy sheriff Jesse Fowley in "The Texas Lady" (his character was in love with the heroine Claudette Colbert ).
At one of the Hollywood parties, actress and singer Dale Evans introduced Walcott to his future wife, Barbara May Watkins. On October 3, 1955, they got married.
In 1956 he was on the set of Edward Wood's film " Plan 9 from outer space " and got the main role - the pilot Jeff Trent, who fights with aliens. The film premiered in 1959 (three years after filming) at a small movie theater in Los Angeles. Although the film has been criticized, it is in the public domain of the United States .
In 1961, starred in one of the central roles in the biopic “ Outsider ”.
In the 70s, he starred in minor negative roles in several films with Clint Eastwood - “ Joe Kidd ” (1972), “ Stormbreaker and the Quick-Footed ” (1974), “ Sanction at the Eiger Peak ” (1975) and “ Anyway, you lose ” (1978). Eastwood usually beats the hero Walcott to the blood near the end of the film.
Here is what Walcott said about his filming as villains:
It always seemed that movie villains have a little more scale [than positive characters] , a little more brightness, a little more character. This is pretty interesting.
Original textThe villains always seemed to have a little more dimension, a little more color, a little more character. It's kind of fun, too.
One of Walcott’s last roles in the movie was in Tim Burton 's Ed Wood movie in 1994.
Death
The actor died on March 20, 2015 in Los Angeles. Buried under his real name "Bernard Mattox" at the Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery next to his wife Barbara.
