Story
Elizabeth Lane is the author of a popular housewives magazine column on food and households, periodically describing “her life” there with her husband and child on a Connecticut farm. In real life, she is an unmarried New York journalist living in a Manhattan apartment, who has never lived in the countryside and practically does not know how to cook, but uses recipes and useful tips for her column friend, cook Felix Bassenak.
One fine day, its publisher Alexander Yardley, who has no idea about these circumstances, orders Elizabeth to take public dinner on his farm and hold a Christmas dinner for him and returning from the war hero sailor Jefferson Jones, who read all the issues of her column while in hospital, and was so impressed that he asked the nurse to write a letter to the publisher. Realizing that the disclosure of the secret threatens scandal and the dismissal of at least herself and the editor Dudley Beecham, who worked directly with her, the journalist obeys and is feverishly trying to find a way out. In desperation, Elizabeth agrees to marry her friend John Sloan, the owner of the Connecticut house, despite the fact that she does not love him, and also asks Felix to help her portray a skilled mistress. Having gathered on Christmas Eve at Sloan’s farm and “borrowed” a child from their neighbors, Elizabeth and John persuade local judge Crowders to immediately marry, but the ceremony is interrupted by the arrival of Jefferson. Elizabeth and Jefferson fall in love with each other almost at first glance, and their affection only increases when a sailor who has experience in dealing with his sister's children helps a girl with difficulty concealing her inexperience to buy a child. Nevertheless, he restrains himself from interfering in someone else's life, believing that Elizabeth is not free.
The judge returns on Christmas morning, but the ceremony is postponed a second time when Felix claims that the child swallowed his watch (later admitting to Elizabeth that he had lied to stop the wedding). When Elizabeth and her friends attend a local festival, the child’s real mother comes to take him home. Yardley witnesses her departure with a child, mistakenly assumes that this is kidnaping, and notifies the police and newspapers. Elizabeth and Jefferson spend the night in prison on the erroneous charge of stealing a horse and sleigh and return to the farm the next morning.
Yardley chastises Elizabeth for being absent all night, forgetting about her child. Tired of recent events, Elizabeth admits everything, and an angry publisher dismisses her. As if this were not enough, unexpectedly there comes the bride of Jefferson Mary Lee. Dejected Elizabeth leaves to pack her things and leave the farm.
Meanwhile, Felix discovers that Mary Lee has married another and must break the engagement, and reveals this to Jefferson. He also lures Yardley into the kitchen with the smell of cooking and presents him with a story about Elizabeth’s alleged job offers from a rival magazine, and Yardley decides to hire her back with a higher salary. Elizabeth's training camp is interrupted first by Yardley, and then by Jefferson - who first teases her, but then invites her to get married and gets her consent.
