The final in the women's 3000 meters race took place on March 20, 2016. At the start went 13 athletes. After a mark of 1200 meters, the current world champion and world record holder Genzebe Dibaba went ahead. Nobody decided to support her breakthrough, as a result, the advantage of Ethiopian at the finish over her rivals was overwhelming (including over the compatriot, two-time Olympic champion Meseret Defar ).
