Prayer “ Our Father ”, recorded in Yupik syllable letter [1] | |
The prayer " Our Father ", recorded in Yupik ideographic writing. 1909, Quillingoc, next to the Gulf of Cuscoquim [1]
Uyakuk, who spoke only Yupik, originally used aboriginal pictograms as scripture , which served as mnemonics in the preaching of the Bible ; however, when he realized that this letter does not allow the exact sound of words to be reproduced, bypassing the Latin alphabet that he made for English-speaking missionaries , he and his assistants developed the Yupik syllable letter until it became complete [2] . Although Uyakuk never learned either English or Latin alphabets, this syllable writing was influenced by both [3] : for example, the syllable kut was indicated by the handwritten form of the English word good .
