Biography

Charles Philippe Lafon was born December 1, 1781 in the city of Paris [6] .

S. F. Lafon

He took the first music lessons from his uncle Bertom, then improved his art under the guidance of Rodolf Kreutzer and Pierre Rohde ; studied harmony with Henri Montan Burton [7] .

As a child, Lafon made concert tours and continued the touring life of a wandering virtuoso until he received (after Rode, who returned to France) the seat of a court virtuoso in St. Petersburg , and in 1815, Louis XVIII invited him to a similar post in Paris [7] . According to N. F. Solovyov , “ his spotless, soft tone, confidence in the transmission, and charm in the chanting places led the audience to the delight ” [8] .

Meanwhile, Charles Philippe Lafon continued to make tours and, during one of them, in 1839, died in an accident, falling out of a mail carriage from a height between Bagnere de Bigor and Tarbes [7] .

Charles Philippe Lafon wrote seven violin concerts, many fantasies, rondos, variations, etc., partly with an orchestra, partly with a string quartet, piano, harp, etc., as well as about 200 romances and two small operas (St. Petersburg and Paris) [ 7] .

Lafon was also a singer, but he is mostly remembered as a virtuoso violinist. Among his students was Francois Schubert .
