Vologda or the city of Vologda is an administrative-territorial unit ( city of regional significance ) [5] [6] and a municipality ( urban district ) [7] [8] in the Vologda Oblast of Russia .

The administrative center is the city of Vologda .
Content
Geography
The city of Vologda is located in the southwestern part of the Vologda Oblast, 480 kilometers from Moscow and 680 kilometers from St. Petersburg . From all sides it is surrounded by the territory of the Vologda region .
The urban district borders on the following rural settlements of the Vologda municipal district :
- In the northwest and in the west - with the May joint venture ;
- In the southwest and in the south - with the rural settlement of Sosnovsky;
- In the southeast and in the east - Podlesny joint venture ;
- In the north and northeast - with the Semenkovsky joint venture .
The only large body of water in the territory of the urban district is the Vologda River, which also flows through the village of Molochnoe , separated from the city of Vologda by the territory of the May rural settlement . Within the boundaries of the okrug, many small rivers and streams flow into this river.
