Biography
In 1927 - 1933 he studied at the Kaunas Art School with Mstislav Dobuzhinsky and Adomas Galdikas [1] . In 1933 - 1941 he worked for the magazine Zhiburelis ( Žiburėlis , Ogonyok), the publishing and book-trading company Spaudos Fondas ( Spaudos fondas , Printing Fund), and the printing house Spindulis ( Spindulys , "Ray").
Since 1941 he taught at the Vilnius Art School, in 1941 - 1944 at the Vilnius Academy of Art. In 1944-1951 he was a teacher at the Vilnius Art Institute , from 1951 - at the Art Institute of the Lithuanian SSR ; in 1948 - 1968, head of the department of graphics, since 1957 professor.
In 1958 - 1982, chairman of the Union of Artists of the Lithuanian SSR . Since 1975, a full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR .
Since 1935 he participated in art exhibitions. Personal exhibitions were held in Vilnius (1956, 1966, 1976, 1982), Moscow (1967, 1977), Mühlhausen (1967), Sobotka (1975).
He was buried at the Antokolsky cemetery in Vilnius [2] .
A memorial museum with an exposition of paintings and drawings by Kuzminskis, his personal belongings and furniture [2] operates in his native town.
Creativity
He worked in the technique of linocut and woodcut . The works are characterized by a combination of traditions of Lithuanian folk woodcuts and decorativeness.
Author of easel engravings on the themes of everyday life and work, cycles based on Lithuanian folk songs “Oi lekia, lekia gulbių pulkelis” ( 1963 ), “Ei pūtė, pūtė” ( 1965 ), “Bijūnėlis žalias” ( 1968 ), many architectural landscapes of Vilnius - „Vilnius. Bernardinų bažnyčia “ (Vilnius. Bernardine Church, 1944), Vilnius. Pilies skersgatvis " (" Vilnius. Piles Lane ", 1947), the cycle " Vilniuje " (" In Vilnius ", 1981 - 1984 ). He created a number of portraits (for example, Antanas Venzlova , 1965 ). Among the works of Kuzminskis in the Maironis Literary Museum in Kaunas , mostly purchased from the artist himself in 1976 - 1987 , there are portraits of Kostas Korsakas (1965; charcoal, pencil), Eustace Paleckis (1971, woodcut), Pyatras Vaiciunas (1942, pencil) [ 3] .
He illustrated and designed the books of Lithuanian writers and poets - “Baltaragis Mill” ( “Baltaragio malūnas” by Kazis Boruta (36 woodcuts, 1945 ), “Egle queen of snakes” ( “Eglė žalčių karalienė” ) by Salome Neris ( 1946 ), poem “Anik” ( “Anykščių šilelis” ) by Antanas Baranauskas ( 1952 ), the poem “Usnyne ” by Theofilis Tilvitis ( 1951–28 woodcuts; 1962–14 ), a collection of poems “Red Poppies” ( “Raudonosios aguonos” ) by Ludas Gira 19 ( 8 woodcuts), a collection of poems "A Thousand shazhochkami» ( "Tūkstantis žingsnelių") Justas Paleckis (1970, 8 woodcuts), "Sorcerer» ( "Raganius") Wee tsasa Krėvė ( 1982 ) [3] .
He also dealt with posters , was a recognized master bookplate artist (author of bookplates Alfonsas Maldonis , Eduardas Mezhelaitis , Jonas Šimkus , Theofilis Tilvitis and others [3] ), painted watercolors.
