Biography
He graduated from the Galileo Galilei Scientific Lyceum in Potenza, at the same time he took up politics, heading the regional branch of the Young Left ( Sinistra giovanile ), the youth organization of the Left Democrats party, in Basilicata. He later graduated from the International Free University for Social Research ( LUISS ) in Rome , and subsequently received his doctorate, defending work on the history of Mediterranean Europe. He became the leader of the “Young Left”, in 2004 he returned to Potenza and was elected to the communal council on the list of left-wing democrats . In 2009, he was appointed assessor for urban studies, but preferred a career as a party member. Unexpectedly for many, he won the election of the secretary of the regional organization of the Democratic Party in Basilicata, having outperformed experienced rivals: Mayor Matera and several times served as regional assessor Erminio Restaino [1] .
In the 2012 election of a leader, the PD supported the candidacy of Pierre Luigi Bersani . In 2013, he was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies , topping the party list in Basilicata. On March 19, 2013 he was elected leader of the DP faction in the Chamber of Deputies [2] .
On April 15, 2015, in disagreement with the draft new Italicum election law , supported by the leadership of the Democratic Party and the Renzi government , resigned from the post of faction leader [3] .
February 25, 2017 Speranza and Tuscany Governor founded the Democratic Party (the founders had in mind article 1 of the Italian Constitution , which states: l'Italia è una repubblica fondata sul lavoro , that is, “Italy is a republic based on labor”), the purpose of which is to update the center-left political spectrum of Italy, with the intention of presenting a left-wing alternative to the political course of Matteo Renzi at the future party congress [4] .
On February 28, 2017, the Chamber of Deputies created its own faction of the movement, which included 37 deputies from the factions of the Democratic Party and the " Civil Choice ". In the Senate, the number of fractions reached 14 people [5] .
March 4, 2018 went to the next election to the Chamber of Deputies as a candidate from the left bloc “Free and Equal” in Tuscany and achieved success [6] .
