Biography
He graduated from high school in 1952. In the Armed Forces of the USSR since August 1952. He graduated from the Achinsk Military Aviation Technical College of Long-Range Aviation (1954). From January 1955, he served in the Air Force as a technician for accounting and planning, and since January 1956, as a technician in an aviation group for routine maintenance and repair of power plants of the 1096th Separate Bomber Aviation Regiment of the 201st Heavy Bomber Aviation Division of Long-Range Aviation. In the same 1956 he was sent for retraining for service in the missile forces.
In 1961 he graduated from the Kharkov Higher Aviation Engineering Military School . After graduating from college, he served in the Strategic Missile Forces : in the 41st Guards Missile Division ( Aleisk ) he was the chief of the calculation , from November 1961 he was the deputy head of the group, and from January 1963 he was the head of the group of the missile regiment. In 1962 he took part in the 2nd set of astronauts of the Air Force Cosmonaut Training Center , but was not enrolled in the cosmonaut squad . From April 1963 he served in the 39th Guards Missile Division ( Pashino , Novosibirsk Region ) - senior assistant to the head of the combat readiness and combat training department of the missile division, from November 1966 - chief of staff of the missile regiment, from February 1968 - deputy commander of the missile regiment for combat management in the 14th missile division .
He graduated from the command department of the F.E.Dzerzhinsky Military Academy in 1970. Since July 1970, the commander of the 225th Missile Regiment , since August 1971 - Deputy Commander of the 59th Missile Division ( Kartaly , Chelyabinsk Region ). From 04/19/1973 to 08/30/1976 - the commander of the 14th Yoshkar-Ola Missile Division . He made the division one of the best in the Strategic Missile Forces.
He graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR named after K. E. Voroshilov in 1978. From August 1978 - first deputy commander and from 04/21/1980 to 12/12/1984 - commander of the 33rd Omsk Missile Army . He made a great contribution to the formation and putting on combat duty of the Barnaul division. Since 1981, missile regiments in the Novosibirsk division began to take up combat duty.
In June 1984 he was appointed head of the 2nd Directorate, in April 1985 - head of the 3rd Directorate of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR - Deputy Head of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff .
From July 1987 to September 3, 1994 - Chief of the General Staff of the Strategic Missile Forces (reassigned to this position by order of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation of September 30, 1992). He paid much attention to improving the combat alert system, equipping command posts with an automated combat command system, developing and implementing the principles of the combat use of mobile missile systems and mobile control centers for them. The first of the chiefs of the General Staff of the Strategic Missile Forces, which was closely connected with military science. He personally led the research, actively participated in military-scientific conferences in the troops, organized and personally conducted methodological councils of the Missile Forces. Member of the Military Council of the Strategic Missile Forces from 07/17/1987 to 6/11/1994.
Since September 1994, retired to reach the age limit. He worked as a research fellow at the Environmental Center of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation .

Doctor of Military Sciences (1994, topic - concept of the Strategic Missile Forces development until 2015, this concept was implemented). Full member of the Academy of Military Sciences (1996).
He was a member of the CPSU from 1959 to 1991.
He lived in Moscow . He died on December 3, 2003. He was buried at the Troekurovsky cemetery .
